Dark Fruitcake Recipe

- 1 pound candied fruit, mixed and chopped
- 2 ounces candied ginger, chopped finely
- 1/2 pound seedless raisins
- 1/2 pound seedless golden raisins
- 1/2 pound dried currants
- 4 ounces candied cherries, coarsely chopped, plus 4 whole cherries saved for decoration if desired
- 4 ounces walnuts, or pecans, finely chopped, with 8 halves saved for decoration if desired
- 2 lemon rinds finely grated
- 1/2 cup orange marmalade
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 1/4 cup brandy, or orange juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon mace
- 1/4 teaspoon cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon allspice
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 pound unsalted butter, or margarine
- 1 cup sugar
- 6 large eggs
