Baked French Toast (Make Ahead)

  • 2 tablespoons butter, or more as needed
  • 1 16-ounce loaf challah bread
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • dash of salt
  • Praline Topping
  • 10 tablespoons maple syrup, or more to taste

Directions

  1. IMPORTANT: Requires overnight refrigeration; but then in the morning you just bake!
  2. Generously butter the inside of a 9x13-inch flat baking dish.
  3. Slice bread into 1-inch cubes and arrange in the prepared baking dish.
  4. Combine eggs, half-and-half, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl; beat with a handheld mixer until smooth.
  5. Pour egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes.
  6. Cover baking dish with foil and refrigerate 8 hours to overnight.
  7. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  8. Spread praline topping (see recipe) evenly over the bread and bake until puffed and lightly golden, for 40 minutes.
  9. Serve with maple syrup.
