  • butter for greasing
  • flour for baking dish
  • 1 (14-ounce) bag caramels
  • ⅔ cup evaporated milk, divided
  • 1 box German chocolate cake mix
  • ⅔ cup melted butter
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped pecans
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Heat caramels with ⅓ cup evaporated milk in a double boiler over high heat until melted, 5 to 7 minutes.
  3. Mix German chocolate cake mix and butter together in a bowl until smooth. Add remaining ⅓ cup evaporated milk and pecans by hand until batter is moistened.
  4. Press a little less than ½ the cake mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 6 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the baked mixture and pour caramel on top of the chips; cover with the remainder of the cake mixture. Flatten batter pieces in your hand and lay on top of caramel.
  7. Bake until top is cooked through, 15 to 18 minutes.
  8. Cool chewy gooeys before cutting.
  9. These can be frozen.
